The Science of Postponing Human Aging

Prof. Michael R. Rose

Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California, Irvine School of Biological Sciences, 321 Steinhaus Hall, Irvine, CA 92697-2525

The postponement of human aging has been a
perennial interest of scholars from all cultures.
But progress toward this goal has been slow.
There are a number of important scientific
results that both limit and inspire prospects for
postponing human aging. One of these is that
aging is not a biological universal.

Another important scientific result is the extension of life span in experimental animals. However, there
are a number of caveats concerning these results.
In particular, life span extension may not
involve the postponement of aging. Nonetheless,
it is likely that mankind will postpone human
aging in this century.
